Humanities Podcasting Symposium 2025

Punk rock isn’t something you grow out of. Punk rock is an attitude, and the essence of that attitude is ‘give us some truth.’” — Joe Strummer

The 5th annual HPN Symposium took place at a pivotal moment in our culture – one where Joe Strummer’s quote felt more imperative than ever.

Every day, we are inundated with information, images, and video – a carefully curated summary of our world which is art of a purposely bloated download.

We consume media consciously and unconsciously, attempting to survive this bombardment while feeling isolated from our communities.

Like Punk rock, podcasting has proven to be a powerful response to the massive defunding of public radio and television.

It offers an alternative, independent of big-budget constraints, and serves as a dissenting dissonance – building supportive communities and celebrating our raw, diverse humanity.

This year’s symposium delved deeply into the potential power of podcasting as a modality, raising energetic questions:

  • What is the role of the humanities podcaster in our current socio-political moment?
  • How can collaborations enhance indie podcasters’ reach?
  • Do scholastic podcasters need the Academy?
  • How can podcasters speak truth to power in a saturated medium?
  • How do we keep podcasting Punk rock?

We invited podcasters from around the world – academic, non-academic, industry professionals, and independent creators – and the response was incredible.

Participants had open discussions on methods and trends in scholarly, educational, activist, and creative spaces, exploring podcasting’s power to speak truth to power.

The HPN team would like to thank panellists and registrants for participating.

You can watch back the videos of each session on the HPN YouTube channel very soon.
